NICU Rotation VGH May 17th to June 11th
Week 4
The last 4 weeks have flown by! This week I presented my case presentation on a newborn with subcutaneous fat necrosis and hypercalcemia. I also continued to attend NICU rounds, assess women on mother-babe and interview women on ante-partum about home medications and supplement use. We also reviewed medications in neonatal abstinence syndrome and IV solutions in the NICU.
Week 3
During week three I attended a smoking cessation conference. I have already been able to integrate this knowledge into my practice. I have asked patients about smoking history during my medication reconciliation interview and made suggestions on how to quit. I have provided resources to partners that also are contemplating quitting. Pregnancy is a great time to quit smoking and it is beneficial to the newborn if other household members stop smoking before they come home. I have also presented information to nurses in LDR about medications in Preterm Labour. I have continued to attend rounds and answer drug information questions and interview and assess patients for proper supplementation during pregnancy.

Week 2
During week two I have continued to attend rounds and assess neonatal TPN orders. I have also continued to follow my patients from last week and have done medication histories and medication assessments on new women admitted to the ward. This week I facilitated a Journal Club that compared two medications used to stop pre-term labour. I am also starting to work on a presentation to nursing staff for week 3 and my case presentation in week 4.

Week 1
This week was a good introduction to perinatology. I attended rounds, helped answer some drug information questions (use of pamidronate in hypercalcemia) and did some medication reconciliation with women admitted to the antepartum ward. I also found an article on tocolytics for my Journal Club next week and began researching my drug presentation to the nurses in LDR.
