VIHA Pharmacy Residency Program 2009 – 2010
Education: UBC BSc. Pharm 2009
Why I applied for a residency?
I applied for a residency because I wanted to continue my learning and gain valuable clinical experience. I felt that I did not have enough exposure during my undergraduate degree in the hospital to confidently assess patients in the hospital setting and knew that this was the best way to gain that experiential learning.
What type of learner I am?
I enjoy learning by doing. I find that reading, followed by discussion and then practical application (attending rounds, assessing patients, looking at charts etc.) works the best for me! I like to be exposed to topics ~3 times in different ways to really learn it for life and not just for the exam!
What are my interest areas?
The electives I have chosen are cardiology and perinatology. Currently I am interested in pediatrics/perinatology and geriatrics. I know that once I have more exposure to other wards I will most likely change my interests so I am open to gaining knowledge in all areas and have not decided to focus on a particular area.
What are my career goals?
I would like to practice in a clinical position in an area of interest and be involved in direct patient care. I hope to work with an interdisciplinary team where we can help patients to achieve their desired health related outcomes. In the future I also anticipate that I would like a role in management and will continue to build on my leadership skills to obtain this goal.
What are my personal learning goals?
Currently my learning goals are to become confident in patient assessments and have a clear process to evaluate each patient. I would also like to continue developing my therapeutic knowledge and evaluation skills of primary literature.
In the future I hope to gain further education such as a Pharm D or Masters in Leadership/Management.
